If you are like me, then you have learned that stock marching band arrangements often contain percussion parts that are too easy, uninteresting, and ineffective. Essentially, they do not maximize the capacity of your ensemble’s talent or equipment.

My name is Jeff Gorbski. I have a degree in music composition, and teach and arrange for college marching percussion ensembles and have done so for the past 6 years, with high school ensembles before that. My specialty is modifying or completely re-writing percussion parts in stock arrangements to either match or push the abilities of your entire ensemble or certain individuals in your ensemble — your preference — to maximize their sound potential. All within the confines of your current instrumentation limits. If this is what you are looking for to help your marching percussion ensemble, then contact me. I have been re-writing music for years to help balance ensembles with those problems mentioned. I have a keen understanding of the ranges of instruments and can help you cross-cue missing parts into others to help balance your music! No longer will you have to suffer with missing parts, which can grealy impact the over-all quality of your program! I also transcribe music and can write out missing parts or incorrect parts!

I’ve been teaching drill since 1996 to bands both small and large; I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t in terms of both effect and ease of teaching. I’ve fixed forms and edited endings, and now I’m looking to take the next step by writing an entire drill.

I have plenty of marching experience with some top groups, but more important is what I’ve learned by teaching good drills and not-so-good drills. I’m a physics teacher with the summer off, so I can assure you I have both the analytical abilities to see what can happen and the time to make sure it happens. I’m looking for one and only one band, so I will meet every deadline without sacrificing quality. I am a free-lance trumpet player, so I can read a score and understand staging and musicality.

I understand that I’m a rookie who’d be writing my first drill, so my fee will be very, very negotiable. If you’ve been hit with a budget cut, this could be a wonderful opportunity for both parties.

I’ll be happy to provide references as to my instructing experience, as well as my musicianship and commitment to a quality product.

If time and geography allow (I live in North Jersey and teach one band during camp, another during the season) I would be more than happy to help out with teaching and cleaning.

Based out of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, Keith Reeves has been composing for wind ensembles and marching bands for a decade, and has done arrangements for ensembles ranging from small-sized locally competitive marching units to Division II DCI corps.

From basic arrangement to full original composition, ensure that the challenge, form, and content of your organization’s work is appropriate for their aptitude, accomplishes your larger program goals, and works for the competitive or performance environments in which you’ll march this season.

Mr. Reeves will address concerns within your program and write to your strengths while managing your liabilities. Great saxes but no sousaphones this year? Trumpets strong but don’t have much of a range? Eighteen clarinets and one flute? You’re not the first! But an Ithaca College music education and ten years in the education and music industries has given Mr. Reeves performance experience on each wind and percussion instrument, allowing him to understand how to get the most out what you have.

Guest instruction, clinics, and rewrites are also possible based on distance and availability. Collaboration is no problem, and “salvage” operations for incomplete or abandoned packages is a welcome challenge.

Mr. Reeves works with Box 5 Design for complete packages; visual design is available through that partnership.
